Overview
Three-quarters of women experience vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes, lasting for a median of 7.4 years (range 4.8 to 10.1 years). Nearly two-thirds report symptoms interfere with their quality of life. In this interactive, case-based, 60-minute activity, Genevieve Neal-Perry, MD, PhD, and Anita L. Nelson, MD, share their real-world experience in recognizing and treating women with vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. Until recently, treatment has been symptomatic, utilizing a wide variety of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches; however, few are recommended. Drs. Neal-Perry and Nelson discuss these options, as well as the recent approval of targeted therapy based on advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of hot flashes.
